A hot shower is one of life's small luxuries, and it's possible to keep enjoying one while trimming a noticeable amount off the water and energy bill.

Upgrade to a Low-Flow Showerhead

Bathing accounts for a big chunk of the average household's water use, and a low-flow efficient showerhead can cut that water use by about half without any noticeable difference in the shower itself. Lowering the water heater from its usual default of 140 degrees to 120 degrees can save up to $320 a year while still delivering a plenty-hot shower.

Tackle Trash With a Daily Dash

A fast, once-a-day loop through the house with a trash bag, gathering expired coupons, inserts, takeout containers, and packaging, keeps clutter from ever piling up.

Set the Table Straight From the Dishwasher

Instead of putting clean dishes away and pulling them back out later, set the table directly from the dishwasher after a cycle finishes; for anyone who runs the dishwasher overnight, doing the same in reverse each morning saves steps and time.
