Thinking ahead can save you a lot of money. If you don't absolutely have to have it now, wait until the time is right and buy off-season. Right now, at the beginning of fall, items like winter coats are at their most expensive — but what do you think would be the cheapest thing to buy right now?

Buy summer gear now, skip winter gear

Right now we're in the first month of fall. Now is the time to buy that new swimsuit you've been wanting or a new pair of summer shorts. Avoid buying winter coats or boots, as they will be through the roof right now. If your old gear will last, put off those purchases until the spring.

Jeans are also a great fall purchase, because retailers typically use October to get rid of all the unsold denim that is still stuck on their shelves after the back-to-school shopping period ends.

Watch for big-ticket discounts

You can also find big discounts on bigger purchases like patio furniture, lawn mowers and barbecue grills. If you are thinking about buying something like this in the spring anyway, it makes sense to cough up the cash now if you can save 20, 30 or maybe even 40 percent.

If you are buying fruits and vegetables from half way around the world you are paying a fortune. Buy local, in-season fruits and vegetables. Not only are you saving money, but you are supporting the local economy and cutting down on pollution by not having all that expensive food delivered thousands of miles.
