Store-bought disinfectants can contain all sorts of harsh chemicals, some of which should really only be used in controlled settings like hospitals. Used around the home inappropriately, these substances can actually help bacteria become resistant, creating "superbugs." Making your own disinfectant is cheap and easy.

Eucalyptus Oil Spray

Mix a couple ounces of eucalyptus oil into a quart of water in an old spray bottle, shake well before use, and use it like a store-bought disinfectant (keep it out of direct sunlight). Studies have found that eucalyptus oil and its primary compound, 1,8-cineole, is a potent antimicrobial: it kills bacteria and protozoans, but also viruses and fungi such as mold and mildew.

Grapefruit Seed Extract Spray

If you don't like the smell of eucalyptus and prefer something more citrusy, mix 10 to 12 drops of grapefruit seed extract into a half gallon of water and pour it into a spray bottle. It can be used to sterilize fruit and vegetables, sanitize dishes, countertops and cutting boards, inhibit bacteria growth in pools and spas, and even disinfect superficial wounds.
