Baby oil is a versatile household product that can tackle a wide range of cleaning and DIY challenges, from banishing sticky residue to freeing stuck zippers. Here are some favorite uses for this multitasking moisturizer.

Moisturize Wood

Baby oil, made mostly of mineral oil, can help rejuvenate lackluster wood and works well as a lubricant for stubborn wooden drawers. Avoid using it on wood surfaces that touch food, like cutting boards or butcher blocks, since it isn't food-grade and contains fragrance.

Eliminate Sticky Residue

Gently apply baby oil to the edges of sticker or adhesive residue, let it sit for a few minutes, then peel the residue away for a clean surface.

Unstick a Zipper

A few drops of baby oil on both sides of a stuck zipper, followed by gentle rubbing with a cloth, can help it move smoothly again.

Untangle Jewelry

Soak a tangled chain in baby oil to lubricate the metal links, then carefully work out the knot with a pin. Clean the jewelry well afterward.

Condition Leather

Pour a small amount of baby oil onto a cloth and rub it onto leather boots, bags, jackets, or furniture to help condition it, wiping off any excess. Avoid pouring the oil directly onto the leather to prevent drip marks.

Lubricate Locks

If a lock gets sticky and the key doesn't turn smoothly, apply a small amount of baby oil to both sides of the key, insert it, and turn as usual to help lubricate the lock's internals.

Soften Squeaky Hinges

A drop or two of baby oil on a squeaky door hinge, worked in by opening and closing the door a few times, can quiet it down.
