Bottled water is one of the biggest money sucks out there. If drinking from the tap is too much to bear, investing in a water filter is a simple and cost-effective alternative.

Switch From Bottled Water to a Filter

One example found a family of four throws away more than $3,000 on bottled water per year. With a basic pitcher-style filtration system (about $20, plus a new filter every 40 gallons), that same family would spend just $119 — a savings of about $2,900.

Exfoliate With a Loofah or an Oatmeal Scrub

Summer means an increase in dead skin cells, so it's important to exfoliate to keep skin smooth and silky. You don't need expensive products to get that summer glow — simply use a loofah for a light scrub, or make your own exfoliating lotion using a handful of oatmeal, milk, and yogurt.

Stay Hydrated (But Not Overhydrated)

During hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated, which can also make you crave food when you're not actually hungry. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day, but remember it is possible to overhydrate — too much water can affect electrolytes like sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium. Try adding a low-calorie flavoring to water, such as a piece of fruit, or opt for green tea or coconut water.
