A fresh coat of paint can transform a room, but at around $30 a gallon the cost adds up fast, and there are a couple of ways around paying full price.

Look for Clearance or Recycled Paint

Big-box retailers like Lowe's and Home Depot often sell returned paint at a steep discount; the color just wasn't right for the original buyer, but the paint itself is perfectly fine. A local recycling center is another option, since many homeowners and businesses drop off unwanted paint and stain in good condition, sometimes for just a few cents on the can.

Update Counters With Paint Instead of Replacing Them

Resin-based countertop paint kits, from brands like Rustoleum and Gianni, can transform outdated counters into a marble- or Silestone-like finish for $60 to $100, without calling a contractor.

Borrow or Rent Tools Instead of Buying Them

For a tool needed once and never again, nearly 100 libraries across the country now let members borrow tools at little to no cost, and local hardware stores or big-box retailers rent tools too. Just steer clear of commercial-grade equipment that needs a professional to operate safely.
