A clean kitchen is a happier kitchen. Here's a room-by-room rundown for getting your refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, stovetop, oven, and stainless-steel appliances all looking their best.

How to Clean a Refrigerator

A clean refrigerator can transform your kitchen in several ways. Not only does it look nicer, but it also eliminates odors, gets rid of expired foods, and removes unsightly clutter.

Prep and Apply Cleaning Solution: Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Keep this food-safe cleaner in the refrigerator (labeled). Use it to spray and wipe up spills as they occur.

Do a Deep Clean: Periodically, give your refrigerator a thorough cleaning. Remove the drawers and shelves to clean all hidden surfaces and the door gasket. Organize the contents to eliminate clutter.

How to Clean a Dishwasher

Despite its role in cleaning, a dishwasher needs cleaning itself. To prevent odors and grime buildup, clean your dishwasher as often as your shower or sink.

Prepare Dishwasher: Fill a dishwasher-safe cup with vinegar and place it on the top rack of the empty dishwasher.

Run Dishwasher: Run the dishwasher on the hottest, longest cycle to sanitize and loosen food and soap scum.

Do a Deep Clean: For a thorough cleaning, scrub the tops and sides of the door and remove all accessories and removable parts. Use a soft toothbrush to clean the spray arm and remove debris. Tackle hard water deposits by using lemon juice instead of vinegar.

How to Clean a Microwave

Food splatters can make your microwave messy. Here's a quick and simple way to clean it.

Steam Cleaning: A steam-cleaning tool made for microwaves can make quick work of this task. Fill the reservoir to the fill line with equal parts vinegar and water, then run the microwave for a few minutes and watch the steam rise. This will loosen any food that might be stuck to the interior of your microwave.

Wipe Clean: Now that the caked-on food is loosened, wiping the surfaces clean is easier than ever.

How to Clean Your Kitchen Stove

Oil splatters and spills can make your stovetop messy, but cleaning it is straightforward.

Clean as You Go: Quickly scrub away food bits before they cook onto the surface. After cooking, wipe down the stovetop with an all-purpose cleaner on a damp cloth.

Soak Stains and Let Sit: Soak stains in a strong cleaner suitable for your cooktop and let sit as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Scrape Debris and Wipe Clean: Carefully scrape off debris with a single-edged scraper held at a 30- to 40-degree angle. Wipe the cooktop clean.

How to Clean Your Oven

If you notice built-up grime or smoke, it's time to clean your oven.

Prep Oven: Heat the oven to 225 degrees. Place a pan of water inside and let sit for 15 minutes. Turn off the oven.

Scrub Oven: Once the water has cooled, mix it with dishwashing soap. Dip a sponge in the mixture and scrub the inside of the oven. For tough spots, a longer soak or a second pass usually does the trick.

How to Clean Stainless-Steel Appliances

Cleaning stainless steel can be challenging due to water spots, fingerprints, and smudges. Here's how to remove those marks, including dark water stains.

Clean Water Spots: Boil distilled white vinegar, soak a towel in it, and place it on the water spot for 30 minutes. Sponge with baking soda and scrub with the grain. Wipe clean and dry.

Clean Fingerprints: Wipe with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol.

Add Extra Shine: Rub the surface with a soft cloth and a few drops of lemon oil.
