How to Make a DIY Room Divider

You'll need wooden frames or pre-made panels (such as hollow-core doors or MDF boards), hinges (at least two per connection between panels), screws and a screwdriver, sandpaper, paint, stain, or fabric for customization, a paintbrush or roller, fabric staples or a staple gun if covering with fabric, measuring tape, and a pencil. Decorative elements like stencils, wallpaper, or mirrors are optional.

Measure the area where you plan to place the room divider and decide how many panels you want. A typical divider has three to four panels, each around 6 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, but you can customize the dimensions to fit your needs.

Wooden frames, hollow-core doors, or MDF boards are common choices, or repurpose old materials like shutters or pallets for a rustic look. If using wood or MDF, sand down the surfaces to remove splinters and wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Paint, stain, or decorate your panels to suit your room's aesthetic, using a primer first if painting for a smooth finish. For fabric-covered panels, cut fabric slightly larger than the panel and staple it tightly along the edges at the back. Wallpaper, stencils, or peel-and-stick decals add additional flair.

Lay your panels flat on the floor, lining them up side by side, and attach hinges to connect them — at least two per connection, about 6 inches from the top and bottom, with a third hinge in the middle for taller panels. Alternate hinge directions so the divider folds accordion-style. Stand the divider upright and test its stability, adjusting hinges as needed so the panels fold easily without wobbling.

Add final touches like small mirrors for a reflective effect, hanging planters for a bohemian vibe, or string fairy lights for a cozy atmosphere. Position your finished room divider in the desired location, whether sectioning off a workspace, creating privacy, or adding a decorative element.
