Genius House Hacks

Mold is a common issue in many homes, thriving in damp, humid environments. It can affect not only your property but also your health, leading to respiratory problems, allergies, and other concerns. Here's how to prevent, detect, remove, and manage mold in your home.

Preventing Mold Growth

Keep indoor humidity below 50% using a hygrometer and dehumidifiers, ensure proper ventilation with exhaust fans and open windows, address leaks promptly, waterproof moisture-prone walls, insulate cold surfaces to prevent condensation, and avoid overwatering houseplants.

Detecting Mold in Your Home

Look for discoloration on walls, ceilings, and floors, check hidden areas like under sinks and behind furniture, watch for a musty odor, and pay attention to unexplained allergy symptoms like sneezing or itchy eyes.

Removing Mold Safely

Gather gloves, an N95 mask, goggles, and cleaning supplies like vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. Ventilate the room and seal off the area, then scrub small areas with soap and water, a vinegar spray, or a baking soda mixture, depending on the surface. Heavily infested porous materials like drywall or carpet may need to be discarded.

Dealing with Black Mold

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is particularly harmful — don't attempt to clean large infestations yourself; call a professional mold remediation service. For small areas, wear full protective gear and follow removal steps carefully.

Long-Term Prevention and Natural Remedies

Clean bathrooms and kitchens weekly, regularly inspect basements and crawl spaces, use mold-resistant drywall and paint, and manage clutter to improve airflow. For natural remedies, try tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, or a baking soda and vinegar combination.

When to Call a Professional

Call a professional if the mold covers more than 10 square feet, you suspect growth inside walls or HVAC systems, or a family member experiences health problems linked to mold exposure — symptoms can include sneezing, coughing, irritated eyes, and difficulty breathing.

By following these tips, you can keep mold at bay and protect both your home and your health.
