The Simplest Way to Clean a Microwave, Inside and Out

In a microwave-safe bowl, mix 1 cup of water with slices of lemon, lime, or orange, squeezing some juice into the water. Alternatively, use a few tablespoons of white or apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water. Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes until the mixture boils and steam coats the window. Let it sit for five minutes before opening the door, then remove the bowl and wipe the interior with a sponge.

Wipe down the entire door — including edges, both sides, and the seal — with a sponge dampened in water and dipped in baking soda, then rinse with a damp cloth. Use a 50/50 vinegar and water solution to clean a greasy window, then rinse and dry. For heavy grease or stuck-on splatters, apply an all-purpose grease-cutting cleaner or a dish soap and water mix using a cloth or sponge, and scrub gently with a non-scratch pad if needed. Avoid getting cleaner into vent holes, and never spray electronic controls directly — apply cleaner to a cloth first, then wipe.

Over-the-range microwaves have grease-catching filters that should be cleaned monthly to prevent buildup. Fill the sink with warm, soapy water and submerge the filter for at least 10 minutes. If residue remains, add a quarter cup of baking soda to the water and soak again. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations first.

For mild odors (like strong spices), leave the door open to air out or place a bowl of baking soda inside to absorb smells. For strong odors (such as burnt popcorn), clean any residue and place an odor-absorbing gel inside until the next use.

Wash the turntable with warm, soapy water and a non-scratch sponge — most microwave turntables are glass and dishwasher-safe if it's particularly dirty. Wipe the interior walls using a magic-eraser-style sponge. To prevent future messes, invest in a splatter cover when heating food — it reduces food buildup and cuts down on cleaning time.
