Three long months of cold, snowy weather are worth preparing for properly, starting with the shovel or snow blower itself.

Keep Snow From Sticking to a Shovel or Snow Blower

A quick spray of cooking spray on a snow blower's auger and discharge chute, or on a shovel blade, before heading out keeps snow from clogging or sticking as it's cleared.

Keep at Least a Half Tank of Gas in Winter

Running low on gas in cold weather risks more than getting stranded; it lets water vapor in the tank freeze, which can damage the fuel pump. Keeping at least a half tank through the cold months avoids both problems.

Set Up a Wet-Boot Drying System at the Door

A large plastic tray by the door gives wet winter boots, whether from shoveling, school drop-off, or a snowy walk, somewhere to drip dry without soaking the floor.
