A few simple habits keep drains fresher, bugs at bay, and wood surfaces clean without reaching for harsh chemicals.

Freshen Drains With Baking Soda

Baking soda added under hot running water freshens a smelly drain, and combined with hot water it can even help clear a minor clog.

Keep Mosquitoes Away Naturally

Lavender or peppermint plants, or citronella candles in terracotta pots, placed around an outdoor living space repel mosquitoes on a summer evening while also adding a bit of soft ambient lighting.

Clean Wood With a Vinegar-Oil Mix

For wood floors, 1/4 cup of vinegar in a gallon of hot water cleans without damaging the finish; for wood furniture, a mix starting with 1 cup of vinegar to 1 teaspoon of oil works well, with the exact ratio varying by the wood and finish.
