Neither washers nor dryers work optimally when overstuffed, and worse, they have to work harder than they should, increasing wear and tear on the machine's mechanisms (like a washing machine's central agitator). Overpacking can also leave detergent residue behind on clothes.
Four Habits That Shorten Your Washer and Dryer's Lifespan

The lifespan of an average washing machine is around a decade, and the same goes for your dryer. But if you're doing these things, you could be cutting that short.
You're Overstuffing Your Machine
Using Too Much Detergent
Too much soap leads to more suds, which can cause your washer to overflow. High-efficiency washers in particular require less soap to wash properly, so use only soaps marked safe for HE washers, and skimp on the amount.
Not Regularly Maintaining Your Dryer Vent
The dryer vent directs moisture and lint out of the drum and out of the house, and keeping it clear is crucial to keeping the dryer in good working order. A good rule of thumb is to have it inspected and cleaned once a year.
Overusing Dryer Sheets
Dryer sheets have a waxy layer that melts in the dryer, and using too many can gum up the appliance. No matter how many you use, clean the lint trap regularly, not just by clearing lint but by removing the trap and soaking it in sudsy water every couple of months (more often if you also use fabric softener in the wash).
