The Importance of Fall Lawn Care: Preparing Your Lawn for Year-Round Health

Many people assume lawn care matters most in spring and summer, but fall is actually a crucial time to prepare your lawn for winter and set the stage for a lush, vibrant yard when warm weather returns. Here's how to make the most of the season.

1. Rake and Remove Leaves

A blanket of fallen leaves blocks sunlight and traps moisture, inviting fungal growth. Rake regularly, or use a mulching mower to shred leaves into small pieces that decompose naturally and enrich the soil.

2. Aerate the Soil

Compacted soil restricts air, water, and nutrients from reaching grass roots. Fall's cooler, moister conditions make it the ideal time to aerate -- rent a core aerator or hire a lawn-care pro to remove small plugs of soil and open up the ground.

3. Overseed the Lawn

Fall's cooler temperatures and higher rainfall are perfect for germinating new grass seed. Choose seed suited to your climate and conditions, and keep the soil consistently moist until it sprouts and establishes.

4. Fertilize for Strong Roots

Fall fertilization helps grass store energy in its roots for winter survival and spring growth. Use a slow-release fertilizer high in potassium, applied before the first frost.

5. Control Weeds

Weeds like dandelions and clover are still actively growing in fall, making them more vulnerable to treatment. A pre-emergent herbicide prevents winter weeds from germinating, while a post-emergent herbicide targets existing ones.

6. Mow at the Right Height

Gradually lower your mower height as the season progresses -- shorter grass resists matting under snow and reduces the risk of snow mold. Don't go too short, though; aim for about 2 to 2.5 inches on the final mow.

7. Water Wisely

Deep, infrequent watering promotes deep roots. Water early in the morning, gradually cut back as temperatures drop, and stop altogether once the ground freezes.

8. Prepare Your Lawn Equipment

Clean and inspect your mower and trimmer, sharpen blades, change the oil, and add a fuel stabilizer before storing equipment in a dry, sheltered spot for winter.

9. Protect Against Pests

Grubs are often more active in fall and can cause brown, thinning patches by feeding on roots. Apply a fall grub-control treatment if you spot more than five grubs per square foot when lifting a section of turf.

10. Plan for Spring

Take stock of problem areas -- bare spots, compacted soil, drainage issues -- so you're ready to hit the ground running once the growing season begins.

Fall lawn care is essential for a healthy yard all year long. Raking, aerating, overseeding, fertilizing, weeding, mowing correctly, watering wisely, and prepping equipment and pest control now will pay off with a lush, resilient lawn come spring.
