Debris builds up and blocks or impedes a gutter's water flow, leading to water damage inside the home. That buildup can even cause gutters to fall or exterior wood trim to rot over time from prolonged exposure to moisture. Clean gutters at least twice a year.
Everyday Mistakes That Can Lead to Major Home Repairs

As a homeowner, sometimes it's the mistakes you aren't even aware you're making that lead to major repairs down the line. Normal chores like cooking, cleaning, and home projects all create opportunities for error. Here are a few ways you could be causing damage without realizing it.
Not Cleaning Your Gutters Frequently Enough
Pouring Grease Down Your Drain
You're better off letting a dirty pan cool on the stove than trying to pour cooking grease down the drain. Oil, fats, and grease solidify and form blockages in pipes, which has a negative impact on the environment and creates issues for your septic system.
Not Cleaning Your Dishwasher Trap
Even a dishwasher could use a little help from time to time. At least once a month, clean the dishwasher trap, generally located on the lower part of the machine near the sprayer. The rubber gasket and soap holder need a wipe-down too, or you could be shortening the machine's lifespan.
Not Draining Your Water Heater
If you're not draining your water heater at least once a year, you could be setting your home up for major damage over time. Mineral deposits form a thick, crusty coating that chips off and clogs faucets, drains, and the water heater valve, and can cause the inner lining to crack, requiring eventual replacement.
