Essential oils known for repelling insects, like citronella, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, or lemon eucalyptus, form the base of the scent. Witch hazel or rubbing alcohol dilutes the oils, distilled water dilutes the mixture further, and a spray bottle holds the finished repellent.
How to Make a Simple DIY Insect Repellent With Natural Ingredients

A simple DIY insect repellent can be made at home with a few natural ingredients, no trip to the store required.
Gather the Ingredients
Mix and Bottle It
Combine 10 to 20 drops of essential oil (one kind or a combination) with 2 tablespoons of witch hazel or rubbing alcohol, stir well, then add 1/2 cup of distilled water and stir again. Pour into a clean spray bottle and label it.
Apply and Reapply
Shake well before each use, since the ingredients can separate over time. Spray onto skin and clothing, avoiding the eyes and mouth, and reapply every few hours or as needed. Natural repellents may not offer the same level of protection as commercial ones containing DEET or picaridin, especially where disease-carrying insects are a higher risk, so it's worth doing a patch test first to check for any skin reaction.
