How I Built a Custom Drop Zone Entryway Organizer

Assess your needs first: a bench with storage underneath, hooks for coats and bags, and shelves or cubbies for smaller items like keys and mail. Sketch a rough design that's functional yet compact, and measure the available space to adjust your design accordingly.

For this project you'll need plywood for the structure, 2x4s for framing, MDF for the backing, paint and primer, hooks, storage baskets, screws, nails, wood glue, sandpaper, a saw, a drill, a level, a tape measure, and a paintbrush or roller. Choose high-quality plywood and MDF for durability.

Cut 2x4s to length for a sturdy bench base, then assemble the frame with screws and wood glue, keeping everything square and level. Attach plywood panels for the sides and top, then build cubbies above the bench using more plywood for dividers and shelves, spaced evenly.

Cut MDF to size for a smooth, easy-to-paint backing and attach it with screws and wood glue. Measure and mark where hooks should go, drill pilot holes, and screw sturdy, decorative hooks into place for hanging coats and bags.

Sand rough edges with medium-grit sandpaper, wipe down dust with a damp cloth, then apply a coat of primer for better paint adhesion. Apply two coats of paint, letting each dry thoroughly, a semi-gloss finish is easy to clean and adds a subtle sheen.

Place storage baskets in the cubbies for shoes, hats, and gloves, add labels so everyone knows where their belongings go, and finish with a removable, washable cushion cover on the bench for comfort. With help moving the heavy piece into place, use a level to ensure it's straight and secure it to the wall with screws for added stability, especially important with young children in the house.
