Handy Hints on Building a Fire Pit in Your Backyard

Mark the pit's center with a stake and string, then outline a circle 36-44 inches across with paint or chalk. Excavate 6-12 inches deep, clearing grass, roots, and debris, and level the ground. Fill the base with 2-3 inches of compacted gravel or sand for drainage and stability. Lay the first ring of fire bricks or blocks level and tightly fitted, tapping into place with a rubber mallet, then build up additional staggered layers (with fire-resistant mortar between fire bricks) to a height of about 12-20 inches. A metal ring insert, if you have one, protects the stones from direct heat and extends the pit's life. Finish with a few inches of gravel in the bottom for drainage and easier cleaning, plus decorative stones or lava rock if you like.

Always use fire-resistant bricks or stones -- river rocks can crack or explode under heat. Keep a clear safety zone of at least 10 feet free of flammable debris, consider a spark screen to contain embers, and keep a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of sand nearby. Never leave the fire unattended, and clean out ashes regularly while checking stones for cracks or damage.

Arrange comfortable seating -- Adirondack chairs, benches, or outdoor cushions -- at a safe distance from the flames, and add string lights or lanterns for ambiance. A grill grate or skewers turn the fire pit into an outdoor cooking spot for marshmallows, hot dogs, or grilled vegetables, and it's a welcome gathering spot in every season -- warmth in cooler months, evening entertainment in warmer ones.
