The Five Minute Baseboard Trick That Actually Lasts

From Anisa's Genius House Hacks newsletter.

Anisa kneeling in her hallway, spraying a diluted fabric softener solution onto a cloth before wiping down her baseboards.

Hello Neighbor! My hallway baseboards collect dust faster than anywhere else in the house. I have no idea why, but it is an annoying thing to look down and see the dust.

I got tired of wiping them down every few days, so I mixed up a diluted fabric softener spray I remembered reading about.

Weeks later, the dust still was not creeping back the way it used to. Below is how I make mine.

Be Well,
Anisa

Keep Your Baseboards Dust Free Longer With This Spray

Diluted liquid fabric softener cuts static, and static is what pulls dust straight back onto your baseboards within days of cleaning them.

How to Do It

Mix 1 part liquid fabric softener with 3 parts water in a spray bottle and shake well. Wipe your baseboards clean and dry first so the spray has a fresh surface to work on, then lightly mist the solution onto a cloth, not directly onto the baseboard, and wipe it along the wood or vinyl. Let it air dry; the light residue cuts static and slows new dust down.

More Ways to Use It

The same trick works on ceiling fan blades and window blinds, anywhere dust clings from static. Keep the bottle under the sink for a quick pass every couple of weeks instead of a deep scrub.

Ask the Genius: Will the Spray Leave Baseboards Sticky?

"Will the fabric softener spray leave my baseboards sticky or attract more dirt?"

Not if you use a light mist and a clean cloth. A heavy, undiluted spray is what leaves a sticky film, so stick to the watered down mix and wipe, do not drench.
