The Best Way to Eliminate Garbage Can Odors

From the Genius House Hacks archive.

Kitchen garbage can

Even if you take out the trash regularly, odors can linger and seem impossible to get rid of. With a few smart tricks and a consistent routine, you can banish garbage smells for good.

Clean the Can Itself

Food juices and other gunk can collect at the bottom and rot, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Once a month, wash the empty can outside with warm water, dish soap, and a scrub brush, then wipe it down with a vinegar-and-water mix, which naturally neutralizes smells and kills bacteria.

Absorb Odors Before They Start

Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of a clean, dry can before putting in a new bag. A dryer sheet adds light scent while absorbing moisture, and a few charcoal briquettes in a breathable bag can absorb odors for weeks.

Watch What You're Tossing

Raw meat scraps, fish, or spoiled produce rot quickly and smell worse than anything else. Double-bag those items or freeze them until trash day, and toss in a handful of used coffee grounds now and then to help neutralize strong food odors.

Keep Moisture Under Control

Odors thrive in damp environments, so avoid pouring liquids into the garbage and change the bag immediately if something leaks. A liner that fits snugly helps prevent leaks from slipping underneath and festering at the bottom.

Maintain a Regular Trash Routine

Even the cleanest can will smell if garbage sits too long. Take out the trash before it's overflowing, especially in hot weather, and wipe down the bin each time you change the bag.

It's about a combination of cleaning, prevention, and smart habits, not one magic solution.
