Built right into the knob, it's easy to use and provides a basic level of security, great for keeping kids or pets from wandering off. The downside is that because the lock is part of the knob, burglars can sometimes break or twist it open, so it shouldn't be the only security feature on an exterior door.

With so many lock options, it can be tricky to know what you actually need on your front door. Two of the most common types are the everyday door knob lock and the sturdy deadbolt, and each serves a different purpose.

The Deadbolt: Built for Strength
A deadbolt slides a thick metal bolt directly into the door frame, making it much harder to force open when installed with a solid strike plate and long screws. Single-cylinder versions use a key outside and a thumb turn inside; double-cylinder versions require a key on both sides for extra protection near windows.
Do You Really Need Both?
Yes. The knob lock gives convenience and everyday functionality, while the deadbolt adds the real muscle against intruders. If you only have one, the deadbolt is the smarter choice for exterior doors, but using both gives the most peace of mind.
Most burglars look for easy targets; if your door takes more time and effort to break into, they're far more likely to move on to the next house.
