Stop Energy Vampires from Sucking Your Wallet Dry

From the Genius House Hacks archive.

Electrical outlet with plugged-in devices

Phantom or vampire energy is the power devices use even when you think they're off. Cable boxes, chargers, and gaming consoles stay in standby mode so they can power up quickly, and that hidden draw adds up over time.

How Much Does It Really Cost You?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, phantom energy can account for 5 to 10 percent of a total electricity bill, adding up to $100 or more a year. A cable box on standby can use around 20 watts per hour, a plugged-in laptop charger draws 4 to 5 watts even unconnected, and a gaming console in sleep mode can pull 15 to 30 watts nonstop.

Common Energy Vampires in Your Home

Cable boxes and DVRs, gaming consoles, computers and laptop chargers, smart speakers, kitchen appliances like microwaves and coffee makers, phone chargers, and flat-screen TVs often draw power around the clock unless unplugged.

How to Stop the Energy Drain

Unplug devices you're not using, like a toaster or coffee maker after the morning rush. Use power strips to cut off several devices with one switch, or try smart plugs to control power remotely. Enable energy-saving modes where available, and look for the ENERGY STAR label when upgrading appliances.

Even small changes, like unplugging chargers or turning off unused electronics, can make a noticeable difference.
