What to Do Before the Leaves Drop

Genius House Hacks

Taking a few weekends to get ahead of the season can save a lot of trouble down the road, basically giving your home a little tune-up before the seasonal shift.

Start With Gutters and the Roof

Clean out leaves before they clog gutters and cause water to back up into the roofline, and check for loose or damaged shingles while you're up there.

Give the Yard Some Love

Rake leaves early, especially around the foundation, since wet decomposing leaves can invite pests and mold. Aerate the lawn, fertilize, and overseed bare patches while the ground is still warm.

Don't Forget Garden Beds

Trim back perennials, pull dead annuals, and add a layer of mulch to protect the soil. Harvest what you can from a vegetable garden, and plant garlic for a spring surprise.

Get Your Heating Ready

Change the furnace filter and have the HVAC system serviced if it's been a while. If you use a fireplace, have the chimney inspected, since creosote buildup is a real fire hazard.

Check Windows and Doors for Drafts

Even small gaps let cold air in and heat out. Weatherstripping or caulk makes a noticeable difference in both comfort and energy bills.

Swap Out the Linens

Pull out cozy blankets, flannel sheets, and heavier curtains. Switching throw pillows or adding a few candles helps the whole space feel warm and welcoming.

Stock Up Before the First Storm

Salt for walkways, batteries for flashlights, and a few extra pantry staples mean you won't need to run to the store on a snowy day.

Tackle one area at a time, and you'll be able to enjoy the season knowing your home is safe, warm, and ready.
